VINTAGE SPEEDWAY DISPLAY
Celebrating their sixth consecutive year of displaying speedway cars and promoting the sport, speedway enthusiasts Chris Mann and Ray Read are once again back at the Euroa Show & Shine with an exciting array of speedway machinery and offerings.
Their “Friends of Euroa Speedway” stand will this year feature a Vintage theme, focussed on the iconic 1970s, when speedway in North Eastern Victoria was in its heyday.
Their eight car display will feature a Super Modified, Vintage Hot Rod, Midget Speedcar, Vintage Sprintcar, two “Humpy Holdens” an Austin 7 racer and a 2-door Falcon Saloon car. Most of these cars are owned and displayed by Chris and Ray’s friends, who will be happy to discuss their vehicles with fans and spectators.
A surprise feature of the display will be an interactive “Fantasy Race” a fictional encounter at the old Euroa Hot Rod Track between the top saloon car drivers of the 1970s. Both Chris and Ray have each nominated their “Top 24” Saloon Car drivers from the North Eastern Hot Rod Association in the 1970s.
Ray Read’s new book, “One Brief Shining Moment” released just a few months ago will be available for sale. It’s a story about the history of speedway racing in North Eastern Victoria from the 1930s up to the present day, and a must for local speedway fans.
There will be a continuous showing of video clips featuring videos and stills of local speedway racing in the 1970s, from Euroa, Seymour, Murchison, Rushworth, Wangaratta, Bendigo, plus crash compilations and others. The stand will also feature “historic speedway stuff” for visitors to look through, plus give-away posters and more!
This year, the speedway stand will be supporting Wahgunyah Speedway, just across the river from Corowa. Veteran Corowa Club member and historian Terry Cornelius will be on hand to tell you all about Wahgunyah’s upcoming speedway season, which traditionally commences with a bang on Boxing Day. Wahgunyah holds the enviable title of the oldest purpose built, still-operating speedway in Australia.
